Leader of Opposition in the Senate, Allyson Maynard-Gibson revealed yesterday that she would not be seeking a nomination for the next General Elections.

While appearing on the Love 97FM/ JCN programme "Jones and Company" the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) senator said she would like to explore helping the community outside of politics.

A woman claiming to be the cousin of 22-year-old Ricardo Knowles, who was killed by police after he escaped from the Central Police Station, said officers should not have shot her cousin because he was unarmed.

A woman claiming to be the cousin of 22-year-old Ricardo Knowles, who was killed by police after he escaped from the Central Police Station, said officers should not have shot her cousin because he was unarmed.

The woman, who called into Love 97’s Issue of The Day talk show yesterday, said Knowles was in his underwear at the time he was shot.

It is believed that police shot Knowles because he reached for a weapon.

A primary school teacher accused of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old sixth grader was charged in a magistrates' court yesterday.

A primary school teacher accused of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old sixth grader was charged in a magistrates’ court yesterday.

Marvin Matthew Sands, 32, of Robinson Road is accused of indecently assaulting the young girl sometime in December 2009.

Sands taught at the Oakes Field Primary School at the time.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, when he appeared before Magistrate

Government officials are gathering today to develop a contingency programme in the event that a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico pushes oil to the shores of The Bahamas.

Government officials are gathering today to develop a contingency programme in the event that a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico pushes oil to the shores of The Bahamas.

An estimated 5,000 barrels a day has leaked since the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the gulf on April 20, but experts have warned that the flow could reach 100,000 barrels in a worst-case scenario.

The incident left 11 people presumed dead and anxious states Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida awaiting the slick’s landfall.

Minister of Environment Dr. Earl Deveaux said environment officials would not sit idly by while the disaster affects the country’s closest neighbour.

Bahamas In Financial Hole

The Bahamas is in a "deep financial hole" and will need at least five years to get out of the financial "mess" it is in, according to veteran banker, Al Jarrett who responded to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) recent prediction that The Bahamas' recession recovery will not be as robust as the Caribbean's.

In an interview with the Bahama Journal recently Mr. Jarrett said as a result of the $1.56 billion worth of cumulative deficit that the government has created in the last two-and-a-half years, The Bahamas’ economy would have to grow by five per cent per annum for five consecutive years just to match its 2007 or 2008 numbers.
