A primary school teacher accused of indecently assaulting a 10-year-old sixth grader was charged in a magistrates’ court yesterday.

Marvin Matthew Sands, 32, of Robinson Road is accused of indecently assaulting the young girl sometime in December 2009.

Sands taught at the Oakes Field Primary School at the time.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, when he appeared before Magistrate Subusola Swain in Court Number 11 on Nassau Street.

He was granted $7,000 bail.

Sands was represented by attorney Ramona Farquharson.

The matter was adjourned to October 14.

A preliminary inquiry is scheduled to be held at that time to determine if there is enough evidence to have the matter tried in Supreme Court.

It is unclear whether Sands still teaches at the school.

Earlier this year, a Central Eleuthera High School teacher was arraigned on five counts of indecent assault.

Police said Orville Clarke, 37, of Kingston, Jamaica, allegedly committed the offences sometime between November 2009 and February 2010.

Sands and Clarke’s arraignments follow previous claims of inappropriate conduct between students and teachers in the public school system.
