A woman claiming to be the cousin of 22-year-old Ricardo Knowles, who was killed by police after he escaped from the Central Police Station, said officers should not have shot her cousin because he was unarmed.
The woman, who called into Love 97’s Issue of The Day talk show yesterday, said Knowles was in his underwear at the time he was shot.
It is believed that police shot Knowles because he reached for a weapon.
Police officers launched an all out search Tuesday morning after Knowles and fellow escapee Renardo Bastian escaped from the Central Police Station around 3:00 a.m.
The men escaped through a back door that led to Bank Lane.
The island-wide search led police officers to the Kemp Road area around 11:00 a.m.
Knowles was caught first.
He was shot three times in the abdomen and later died in hospital.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the police had no reason to shoot and kill Knowles as he had already surrendered.
The female caller claimed that Knowles was at a female friend’s house before "he surrendered to police and was shot."
"My thing is, why would you shoot a person who was wearing boxer shorts. He did not have any clothes on to even hide a weapon. He surrendered to them," said the caller.
To make things even worse, the woman claimed that police did not properly notify family members that he was killed.
"We did not know that they killed him until we watched the news Tuesday night. In fact when we went to the scene earlier an officer told us that the person they shot was not Ricardo and that they would have to fingerprint the deceased. The family also heard that Ricardo did not die in the hospital but on the scene," said the caller.
"People fail to realise that a person is still innocent until proven guilty. Yes, he may have been associated with bad company, but he was never convicted. People have to realise that a family is now mourning a loss."
Knowles and Bastian were expected to return to court on Tuesday for the continuation of their trial.
They are accused of abducting and robbing a New Providence couple in September 2008.
The men were also accused of rape.
