The Bahamas Senator's Right to Libel?

Sir Winston Churchill once said that "democracy is the worst form of Government, except for all the rest." We have a clear example of that when it states in our Constitution "no civil or criminal proceedings may be instituted against any senator......by reason of any matter or thing so brought by him by petition, bill, motion or otherwise."

A few weeks ago Senator Jerome Fitzgerald decided to attack the integrity of Nassau Motor Co. on the floor of the Senate. In a recent letter to the Press Mr. Rick Lowe, a director of the Company, presented the true facts of

There has been a considerable rise in the number of fraud cases, according to police. In fact, in the last six months unsuspecting Bahamians have been swindled out of more than $200,000 in four new scams.

In those six months, 180 matters have been reported to the Commercial Crimes Department.

The majority of the crimes took place in March.

Head of the Commercial Crimes Department at the Central Detective Unit (CDU), Assistant Superintendent of Police, Michael Moxey, told the media that one of the new scams involves persons scouring newspaper advertisements for potential employment.

"This new trend is of great concern to us. What we have found happening as of late is that individuals advertise in

Chinese Labour Fears Spanked

By Kendea Jones

Accountant Raymond Winder (Journal file photo)

A leading accountant said Bahamians have no need to fear the large amount of Chinese labour proposed to come to The Bahamas to assist in the construction of Baha Mar 's $2.6 billion development on Cable Beach.

Many Bahamians have expressed their concerns about the possibility of 5,000 Chinese workers coming to New Providence to work on Baha Mar.

This came after Baha Mar concluded all of the necessary agreements with the Export-Import Bank of China as well as the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).

According to accountant Raymond Winder of Deloitte and Touche, the deal is one of the best things that has ever happened to The Bahamas.

"I think when you look at a project that is the size of Baha Mar, even with 5,000

New DPP Reconsiders

By Sasha L. Lightbourne

Incoming Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Vinette Graham-Allen is reconsidering her recent appointment in light of the firestorm of controversy surrounding the top post, the Journal can confirm.

Well-placed sources close to the incoming director told the Journal yesterday that Mrs. Graham-Allen does not want to come "into a wasp nest."

Sources have also confirmed that the Jamaican attorney will give the position some more thought.

In the meantime, she is said to be looking at other opportunities in Jamaica.

Controversy erupted after former Deputy DPP Cheryl Grant-Bethell was sidestepped for the post. Many assumed that

Terror In Exuma

The quiet community of George Town, Exuma was left paralyzed with fear Sunday after four dreadlocked gunmen shot a man to death in what many believe was a planned hit.

Authorities said the gunmen walked up to a 45-year-old Stuart Manor, Exuma resident and opened fire on him.

Police have not identified the victim, but residents say he is known as ‘Steely’ Smith.

The shooting happened at 7:30 a.m.

Smith, whose body was riddled with bullets, was taken to a local clinic where he died.

A team of officers from the Central Detective Unit flew to Exuma to help police with their investigations.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.

It is unclear if the gunmen are from Exuma.

The country’s homicide count now stands at 55.

Meantime, a woman allegedly stabbed her husband to death outside

PLP Rhetoric: Continually Dividing to Conquer the Bahamas

I was recently involved in a matter whereby a PLP Senator, Jerome Fitzgerald, stated in the Upper Chamber of Parliament that the company I work for "committed an egregious offence against the Stamp Tax" Act.

In a nutshell, we submitted an entry on May 25, 2010, for goods that arrived on May 24, 2010. The entry was approved on May 25, 2010, according to the Bahamas Customs stamp on it, and the Government announced a new tax rate on May 26, 2010. On May 27th we paid the approved entry, after getting a Manager's Cheque from the bank as usual, and collected the product off the dock. 83% of it was subsequently sold. Almost a month later Mr. Fitzgerald took advantage of his lofty position of power and made his comments described above. To make matters worse, Bahamas Customs rescinded their original approval and charged the higher rate of duty
