Terror In Exuma


The quiet community of George Town, Exuma was left paralyzed with fear Sunday after four dreadlocked gunmen shot a man to death in what many believe was a planned hit.

Authorities said the gunmen walked up to a 45-year-old Stuart Manor, Exuma resident and opened fire on him.

Police have not identified the victim, but residents say he is known as ‘Steely’ Smith.

The shooting happened at 7:30 a.m.

Smith, whose body was riddled with bullets, was taken to a local clinic where he died.

A team of officers from the Central Detective Unit flew to Exuma to help police with their investigations.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.

It is unclear if the gunmen are from Exuma.

The country’s homicide count now stands at 55.

Meantime, a woman allegedly stabbed her husband to death outside of a popular East Bay Street restaurant Saturday night in what eyewitnesses are calling "a crime of passion."

The man is believed to be in his late 40s.

Police discovered his body in the eastern parking lot of the Green Parrot Restaurant at 9:00 p.m.

Police said the victim was stabbed following a fight with a woman he knew.

Authorities are now questioning a 43-year-old Nassau Village woman in connection with the incident.

Eyewitnesses told the Bahama Journal that the woman in question is the victim’s wife.

However, police would only confirm that the suspect is the victim’s relative.

Police are also investigating another homicide that occurred in Exuma on Sunday.

Police Investigate Fox Hill Shooting

A man was shot in both his legs early Sunday morning near the Fox Hill Roundabout.

According to police, the victim was on Davis Street at 1:20 a.m. when an armed gunman approached him and opened fire.

The victim is in hospital in stable condition.

Police are questioning three Fox Hill men – two aged 25 and a 22-year-old – with this latest shooting.

Fox Hill Woman Stabbed

A 29-year-old Hanna Road resident was stabbed Friday night at Kingsway Court off Hanna Road.

Police said she got into an altercation with a man she knew and was stabbed several times.

The incident happened at 11:20 p.m.

The victim was taken to the hospital where she was detained and later discharged.

Police are now questioning a 31-year-old Coral Harbour resident in connection with this stabbing.

East Street Man Robbed

Three armed gunmen broke into an East Street man’s home Sunday morning and held him up.

Police said the Deveaux Street resident was sleeping at the time. He told police that the men stole cash, jewelry and a cell phone.

They later fled on foot.

Gas Station Robbed

The Texaco Service Station on East and Soldier Roads was held up Sunday morning.

Police said a man in a black hooded jacket, walked into the service station, put a mask on his face, pulled out a handgun and demanded cash.

It is unclear how much money he managed to steal. He later hopped into a green Honda Accord and headed north on East Street.

Police later recovered the car behind the Bamboo Shack Take-Away on Soldier Road.

Police are questioning two men in connection with this incident.

Gunman Robs Tour Company

A gunman robbed Miracle Tours on East Street and Robinson Road Friday afternoon.

Police said the man entered the agency and demanded cash. He also robbed a female customer of some money.

The suspect later fled on foot east on Robinson Road into the Florida Court area. Investigations continue.

Grants Town School Robbed

A shotgun-toting robber held up Bayview Academy early Friday morning.

The school is located on Augusta Street.

Police said the man, who was wearing a hat and cloth on his face, walked into the school and demanded cash. He robbed a worker of some cash and a cell phone and later fled on foot.

Pair Arrested For Firearm Possession

A driver and his passenger were arrested Monday morning for firearm possession.

Officers from the Mobile Division were patrolling the Thatch Palm and Guinep Tree Street area in Pinewood Gardens when they got into a traffic accident with the driver of a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire.

Police allege that one of the passengers hopped out of the car and tried to escape. Police believed he had a firearm at the time and started chasing him.

Officers later caught the suspect and allegedly recovered a handgun and ammunition.

Police said the driver attempted to escape; however, he was arrested a short time later.

Both men were taken into custody.
